A Fallen
Soldier's Last
Flight Home
I am currently
in San Antonio,
Texas to be with
my mother
celebrating her
90th birthday
today on
Memorial Day in
the United
States. The
second leg of my
flight from
Guadalajara was
Houston to San
Antonio and as
we waited for
the plane to
leave I noticed
two Marines in
dress uniform,
one carrying 3
U.S. Flags. As
we boarded the
flight the
Marines were
sitting in first
class. Before
departure the
pilot made an
announcement
that our flight
was what they
called a 'Fallen
Soldier's
Flight'. A young
Marine sergeant
recently killed
in Iraq was
making his final
journey home to
San Antonio for
burial.
The capital and
crew of
Continental
flight 479 were
honored as were
we all to be
part of this
final journey
and occurring on
Memorial Day
Weekend. As the
plane taxied to
the terminal in
San Antonio we
were greeted by
many police and
fire department
vehicles and the
fire department
did a final
salute to the
fallen marine
with water
spraying over
the plane in
either
direction.
This short
flight from
Houston to San
Antonio will
always be a
special memory
for me as it
gave myself and
others time to
reflect on the
ongoing wars in
which the United
States is
engaged. Whether
one agrees or
not with the war
in Iraq
unfortunately
life's are still
being lost and
we must not
forget those
that have made
the ultimate
sacrifice.
