The ABC's of Investing in Canadian Stocks

Many U.S. investors still have problems, questions and concerns when buying the Canadian Securities.

Preferably U.S. investors will buy the shares/warrants over the Canadian exchange, but since it is virtually impossible now for a U.S. investor to open a 'foreign account' this presents a major challenge. The only brokerage firm we know of in the U.S. that allows the purchase of Canadian securities in Canadian dollars and using the Canadian symbol is PennTrade based in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. This is my go-to brokerage firm and I highly recommend opening an account, if possible.

I hate to see articles which say not to use the Pink Sheets to execute the orders on Canadian Securities. In my opinion, this is extremely misleading and incorrect, even if written by others in the business.

I have personally executed hundred's of transactions using the Pink Sheet Symbols which is a 5 alpha symbol ending in F (for Foreign). This symbol, however, should NEVER be used to get quotes or to monitor the value of your stocks.

The pink sheet symbol is good ONLY for entering your buy and sell orders.

Correct Procedures:

  1. Obtain the 5 Alpha symbol for your Canadian shares or warrants

  2. Obtain the current Canadian price of the securities - REMEMBER, that the primary market is in Canadian and we need the current Canadian price.

  3. If necessary, do a currency conversion from the current Canadian price to U.S. Dollars

  4. Enter your Buy or Sell order now using the U.S. dollar price determined above.

  5. Always use LIMIT ORDERS

  6. Consider using Good Until Canceled Orders if you are entering stink bids or if you are trying to buy or sell very thinly traded securities.

Another online brokerage firm which I have used for many years is NetVest. They do not allow for trading using a Canadian symbol but rather I must use the Pink Sheet symbol. Never have I encountered a problem and reasonable commissions of around $19.

I realize that may be somewhat confusing and I have friends that still don't get it and they are still looking at the 5 alpha symbol for the price to enter their orders. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER !!! Hell, the shares and/or warrants may not have traded in days, weeks or months in the U.S. and the price you see if totally irrelevant. YOU determine the current price - see above by using the Canadian price.

Using the above procedure soon you will be a professional investor and take the mystery out of investing in the Canadian shares and warrants.

If you don't care for warrants, fine, but do not let this stop you from being a subscriber. Only 24% of my portfolio is invested in warrants, and believe me, the rest YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT, ASAP.
